"Former world welterweight champion Jose 'Mantequilla' Napoles kept alive his hopes for another shot at the title by knocking out Texan Manny Gonzalez in the 6th round Saturday night. Napoles needed a victory to have a chance at a title bout with champion Billy Backus. Napoles floored Gonzalez with a sharp left to the head in the 6th round. The former champion pressed the fight to Gonzalez throughout the first five rounds. Gonzalez was on the defensive throughout the fight and it apparently was his good defense which prevented an earlier knockout." -United Press International
