Floyd Patterson 179 lbs beat Jimmy Slade 180 lbs by TKO at 2:05 in round 7 of 10

  • Date: 1955-12-08
  • Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
  • Referee: Dynamite Jackson 37.5-28.5

"Last night young Floyd Patterson, Brooklyn, erased Jimmy Slade, the No. 5 heavyweight contender, from the picture via a TKO in the 7th of a scheduled 10 rounder at the Olympic Auditorium. Patterson knocked Slade down for a nine count in the 5th and the bell probably saved him from a knockout. Patterson ripped open Slade's right eyelid in the 3rd and he chased the New Yorker all over the ring for the better part of seven rounds. But Patterson couldn't quite catch Jimmy the Spoiler. The one time he caught up with Slade was in the 5th. He chased him into a neutral corner, nailed him with a solid right to the jaw and added another as Jimmy went down for nine. Bleeding badly from the gashed eye, Slade was absorbing more punches through the 6th and 7th. And then referee Dynamite Jackson stepped in and stopped the affair after 2:05 of the 7th." -Associated Press

  • "Slade just wouldn't fight. I kept telling him to get in there and look good even if he was losing but I guess he felt that he was too outclassed." -Referee Dynamite Jackson
