Aaron Pryor 140 lbs beat Miguel Montilla 139 lbs by TKO at 0:42 in round 12 of 15

"Aaron Pryor kept the WBA junior welterweight title Sunday and in doing so found out that Miguel Montilla has a lot of animal in him as he stopped Montilla in the 12th round. It was the longest Pryor ever had to fight in his pro career. The beginning of the end for Montilla came in the 11th round when Pryor landed a barrage of head punches. Montilla had shaken Pryor with to the head in the 9th and 10th rounds. Then at the bell opening the 11th, Pryor shot across the ring and unleashed a barrage of at least 30 punches to the head. Montilla tried gamely to fight back and did manage to score with a left hook and two right uppercuts to the jaw. At the beginning of the 12th round, Pryor again charged to the attack. He stunned Montilla with a right to the jaw and followed with an 11-punch barrage to the head that had the challenger helpless in his corner. Referee Joe Cortez then leaped in and stopped the fight at 42 seconds of the round. The champion was comfortably ahead on all three judges' cards." -Associated Press

Post-fight comments

  • "I'm an animal when I fight and I used this tactic on him and he showed me he was just as much an animal. I hope we get the rematch because it would be a great fight." -Aaron Pryor
  • "I was surprised the fight was stopped. I was waiting for the champion to unload because I had something to unload myself. I was tired but so was he." -Miguel Montilla
