• Cortez was originally scheduled to fight Custio Clayton on June 3, 2017 on the undercard of the Adonis Stevenson vs. Andrzej Fonfara (2nd meeting) WBC Light Heavyweight title fight. That fight was scheduled to be held at the Welterweight limit (147 lbs.), but was scrapped when Cortez weighed-in 24 lbs. over the limit.
• When Lafreniere's original opponent dropped out, Cortez was therefore available to take the fight on short notice.
• Cortez still did not make the Middleweight weight limit, such that title was only at stake for Lafreniere.
• Cortez was never down in the fight, but the referee judged that he had taken too much punishment by round 4 and called a halt to the bout at 1:44 of that round.
