"Michael Spinks mercilessly peppered Ramon Ranquello's face and stopped him after six rounds Sunday in Atlantic City. Taking full advantage of an extra five inch reach and four inches in height, Spinks scored dozens of stinging left jabs to cut Ranquello's face in several places, causing officials to stop the fight before the bell rang for the 7th round. Spinks took control of the fight midway in the 1st round and connected against Ranquello at will - backing him up with jabs and combinations whenever Ranquello tried to attack." -Associated Press
- Spinks accepted this bout on 5 days notice after Ranquello's original opponent, Mike Rossman, claimed illness prevented him from training properly for the fight.
- This bout was fought on the undercard to Roberto Duran v Wellington Wheatley.
