Bratton quit with a broken jaw.
"Lightweight champion Ike Williams, 143, moved into welterweight contention with a smashing TKO of Chicago's Johnny 'Honeyboy' Bratton in the 8th round of a scheduled 10-rounder. It was the third time Williams had defeated Bratton. Bratton quit suddenly while absorbing a beating to the head. He held his jaw, the same one Beau Jack broke in a Chicago Stadium bout two years ago. Bratton motioned to referee Norm McGarrity that his jaw may have been broken and then walked to his corner. Bratton was taken to a hospital, treated and released. X-Rays were to be taken today." -Associated Press
- Bratton's physician, Dr. Arno Leshin acknowledged that Bratton sustained a compound fracture of the jaw, but maintained that it was a new injury and not a refracture at the same point where his jaw was broken two years earlier by Beau Jack.
- Bratton's contract had been sold to Hyman Wallman of New York for $12,500 just before this bout.
