"Nino Benvenuti still has top claim on the middleweight title. His 8th round knockout of Tom Bethea, of New York, in this town just across the Italian border, nullified Bethea's surprise KO of the titleholder in a non-title fight at Melbourne on March 18th. This time Nino stayed away from Bethea and escaped the body beating he got from him in Australia. It was not a terrific battle. In fact, the end came in surprising fashion. There was no wearing down process. Nino forced Tom into a corner, then belted him with a stinging left. Immediately Nino crashed his right to the jaw at 2:43 of the 8th and down went Bethea." -Ring Magazine, August 1970 issue
- Purses: Benvenuti - $100,000, Bethea -$17,500
