Panama Al Brown 117 lbs beat Kid Francis 117 lbs by SD in round 15 of 15

  • IBU 1913 - 1946 Bantamweight Title

When Judge Dr. James Sparks, commander of the American Legion in France, cast a vote for Brown, a riot broke out among the fans (who thought hometown boxer Francis had won), and Sparks was badly beaten up. Several hundred gendarmes were required to save him. Sparks had agreed with the French judge, while the Italian judge favored Francis. The match was officially declared "no contest" because Sparks's score card had been destroyed by the mob before he could hand it in. The next day the IBU awarded the bout to Brown. Perhaps it was this fight which unified the world title, not Brown's June 18th bout with Eugene Huat.
