Marvin Hagler 160 lbs beat Kevin Finnegan 162 lbs by TKO in round 7 of 10
- Date: 1978-05-13
- Location: Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
- Referee: Dick Flaherty
As the bell rang to start the seventh round, Finnegan's corner stopped the fight due to severe cuts.
"Middleweight Marvin Hagler stopped Kevin Finnegan of England after six rounds of their scheduled 10 rounder Saturday, to take a step toward a middleweight title fight. The southpaw Hagler, from Brockton, Mass., repeated his showing against Finnegan 10 weeks ago by slicing the Englishman's face with powerful left hooks. Finnegan was unable to come out for the 7th round. Under Massachusetts Boxing Commission rules, Hagler earned a 7th round TKO. Hagler opened a cut over Finnegan's left eye Saturday and later drew blood from the Englishman's nose. The game Finnegan, counter-punching with both hands, suffered a cut left cheekbone in the 5th round, near a fresh scar from the first Hagler fight. Finnegan, the former European Middleweight champion, never has been knocked down and wouldn't give in to Hagler's powerful lefts and rights. But the London resident was covered with blood as he had been in the first fight." -Associated Press
