Danny Lopez vs. Memo Rodriguez
Danny Lopez 125 lbs beat Memo Rodriguez 123 lbs by TKO in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1974-02-03
- Location: Gimnasio de Mexicali, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico
- Referee: Felipe Amador
"In the best tradition of those old 'nick-of-time' movies, Danny 'Little Red' Lopez snatched victory from looming defeat by registering a last minute of the last round KO over Mexico's Memo Rodrigues in Mexicali. Until the 8th round, when he sliced open a cut over Rodriguez' left eye and took control of the gruelling battle, it had been a frustrating evening for Lopez. Rodriguez had deftly avoided most of the bombs thrown at him and had zeroed in with a few of his own, particularly in the 4th round when one of his blockbusters floored the heavily favoured Lopez. In the 10th a sweeping left hook to Rodriguez' jaw sent the tough Mexican crashing to the canvas and pulled the fat out of the fire for 'Little Red.' Though Memo beat the count, he was obviously in no shape to continue hostilities and the referee wisely sent him to his corner." -INTERNATIONAL BOXING, June 1974 issue
- INTERNATIONAL BOXING reported that one judge had the bout even after nine rounds, but the other judge and the referee had Rodriguez so far ahead that Lopez could only win by KO.
