"Mexico's Baby Vasquez, 134, handed Noel Humphreys, 129 1/2, a boxing lesson Thursday night in a 10-rounder at the Olympic Auditorium. The classy Latin got the unanimous decision from the referee and two judges over the crew-cut Humphreys, of Charleston, West Virginia. There were no knockdowns but Vasquez staggered Humphreys with a right to the head in the 9th round. Humphreys, outclassed but game, battled back at the bell." -Associated Press
- Referee Lee Grossman penalized Vasquez one point in the 6th for a low blow.
- Late in the bout Vasquez complained to his manager, Pancho Rosales, that his jaw was hurting. After an examination the following day, Vasquez was diagnosed with a compound fracture of the lower jaw, having fought the last few rounds of the bout with the injury. It was determined that the injury would keep him out of action for 3 or 4 months. And indeed, it shelved him until he came back at the end of January of '58.
