Medel won the title by decisioning Jose (Toluco) Lopez, one of the most controversial fighters in Mexico's history, in a torrid 12 round fight before 18,000 fans at the Arena Mexico. Medel won a unanimous decision to win the vacated bantamweight title. Lopez, whose indifference to training has kept him in trouble with boxing commissions here and throughout the Republic for years, was a victim of perhaps the year's biggest upset in Mexican boxing.
