"Joe Medel of Mexico City reigned today as bantamweight champion of North America. He grabbed the crown Tuesday night from Herman Marquez of Stockton, Calif., with an unpopular split decision at the Coliseum. Marquez staggered Medel with a booming left hook in the 2nd round but after that neither fighter was hurt. Marquez jabbed effectively with a flicking left that kept Medel off balance most of the night. When the decision was announced, many of the 4,000 fans on hand protested loudly." -United Press International
- Medel agreed to give Marquez a rematch within 90 days, but nothing ever came of it.
- On the undercard heavyweight Alejandro Lavorante of Argentina fought Tunney Hunsacker of Fayetville, W.Va.
