  • "Jose Medel, Mexico's bantamweight champion, Thursday night dropped Mitsunori Seki of Japan for a six count in the 2nd round, and then put the inexperienced Japanese down for good in the 5th of a scheduled 10 round fight here. Seki, 19, started a 5th round flurry in the corner but the Mexican landed a solid right hook to the jaw that spun the Japanese fighter around three times before he dropped. He was counted out 36 seconds after the round started. The game Japanese fought from the 3rd round with his left eye closed." -Associated Press

    • Former heavyweight contender Lou Nova, who was in Japan as an entertainer, bowed out as referee after originally accepting the role earlier in the week. He cited that due to the international importance of the bout, he felt he did not know enough about Japanese boxing to accept the position. He did, however, participate as a judge.
