Timeline

  • Ortiz was in attendance when Wilder knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the first round on May 18. After the fight, Ortiz joined Wilder in the ring and asked him for a rematch.[1][2] ESPN, Metro UK and East Side Boxing reported that day that Ortiz was considered the front-runner for Wilder's next bout.[3][4][5]
  • The following morning, Wilder's manager Shelly Finkel said that Ortiz was one of the three options considered for Wilder's next fight.[6]
  • On May 28, Wilder announced that both him and Ortiz had signed the rematch.[7]
  • On September 28 it was announced that the fight would take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on November 23.[8]
