"Mexico's unranked flyweight Octavio Gomez stopped Japan's ranked Katsuyoshi Takayama at 2:29 of the 8th round of a scheduled 10 round preliminary, and halted Takayama's bid for a crack at the title held by Horacio Accavallo, whose manager was at ringside. Gomez opened a cut over Takayama's right eye in the 7th and continued to pound away at it in that round and the fatal 8th, when the fight was stopped by referee Ramon Solis. Takayama was also bleeding at the mouth at the time." -Associated Press
