"World flyweight champion Yoshio Shirai pounded out a unanimous decision here tonight over aging Dado Marino. Shirai staggered the former champion throughout the 15-round title fight but he wasn't able to knock out the Hawaiian-born Filipino. Marino lost the title to Shirai last May yet put up a better scrap tonight before 20,000 fans in the outdoor Korakuen Stadium, but Shirai still won by a wider margin. Marino opened up a cut over Shirai's eye in the 1st round but was unable to take advantage of it. He fought out of a crouch, letting Shirai lead with long lefts but this worked only in the 4th and 7th rounds when Dado clipped Shirai with several left and right hooks to take those heats. The champion finished at a furious pace, trying hard for a knockout in the last two rounds." -Associated Press
