Frank Bruno 230 lbs beat Joe Bugner 256 lbs by TKO at 3:00 in round 8 of 10
- Date: 1987-10-24
- Location: White Hart Lane (Tottenham FC), Tottenham, London, United Kingdom
- Referee: John Coyle
"British heavyweight Frank Bruno settled an old score by stopping veteran Australian Joe Bugner in eight rounds Saturday and knocked the 37-year-old into retirement. Bruno, 25, floored Bugner with a powerful right hand near the end of the 8th round and, although Bugner got up at the count of eight, he was caught by another combination and his cornermen threw in the towel. The fight was Britain's richest sports event ever, with revenues estimated at nearly $5,000,000. It also provided Bruno with revenge for disparaging comments Bugner made about his ability and the strength of British boxing." -Associated Press
- Although announcing his retirement after this bout, Bugner actually staged a successful comeback some eight years later and contested in nine more bouts.
