Notes
- This bout was aired on national TV on the undercard of the Muhammad Ali vs. Jimmy Young world title fight.
- Ron Stander had a record of 29-8-2, including a kayo win over Earnie Shavers in 1970 and a world title fight loss to undefeated champion Joe Frazier in 1972 by TKO in round 5. Going into this bout, Stander had won five of his last six bouts by KO/TKO inside of 3 rounds (the loss was to future world title challenger Scott LeDoux by decision over 10 rounds).
- Ken Norton had a record of 35-3-0, including a split-decision victory over 12 rounds against Muhammad Ali in 1973 as a 5-1 underdog. Going into this bout, Norton had won five consecutive bouts by KO/TKO, including a 5th round TKO of Jerry Quarry for the NABF Heavyweight Title.
- Norton was in charge from the outset as he landed on Slander's head at will as Stander tried to bull his way in and land to the head. Occasionally, Stander did land a shot to the head, but Norton was never in trouble and he in turn wobbled Stander on several occasions.
- Stander was cut on the outside corner of the left eye late in the first round.
- With Stander bleeding badly and reeling from a series of head punches, referee Harry Chechini stopped the fight at 1:19 of the fifth round.
- It was the sixth straight knockout win for Norton, of San Diego, since he was knocked out by George Foreman in a title bid in 1974. [1]
