Chuck Wepner vs. Terry Hinke
Chuck Wepner 225 lbs beat Terry Hinke 220 lbs by TKO at 1:10 in round 11 of 12
- Date: 1974-09-03
- Location: Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
- Referee: Harvey Murdock
"Chuck Wepner retained his American heavyweight title with an 11th round TKO of Terry Hinke of Hayward, Calif., Tuesday night in the Salt Palace here. Wepner, from New Jersey, knocked Hinke down three times in the 11th round of the scheduled 12-round bout before referee Harv Murdock called the fight. Dick Sadler, Hinke's manager said he would make a formal protest of the decision, adding that Hinke "wasn't knocked out, he was pushed out." Wepner was bleeding from a cut near his right eye and his eyes were badly puffed up. There were calls from the crowd to stop the fight during the 9th round when Hinke landed several hard combinations, but Wepner sent Hinke flying across the ring near the end of that round. Sadler complained the referee failed to lead Wepner to a neutral corner and that Wepner pushed Hinke along the ropes for the final knockdown." -Associated Press
