  • Rematch of an NABF middleweight title bout held on September 1, 1973 in New Caledonia, won by Valdez by 12 round decision

"Columbia's Rodrigo Valdes knocked out Philadelphia's Bennie Briscoe in the 7th round of their 15 round contest Saturday to win the vacant WBC world middleweight title. Valdes, who fights out of New York, nailed Briscoe with a left hook and, as the American staggered back, followed up with a right cross which sent him to the canvas. Briscoe got up at 'eight' but staggered straight into the arms of English referee Harry Gibbs who counted him out. Briscoe opened with a series of left and rights, swinging hooks to Valdes' body in the 1st round, but the Columbian suddenly caught him with a left hook sending him staggering across the ring and taking much of the steam out of Briscoe for the rest of the fight. Neither man managed to gain the upper hand in these early encounters but Valdes was always the more scientific in his punching." -United Press International

  • Valdes suffered a cut over his left eye which required several stitches to close.
