"Luis Rodriguez, former welterweight champion, stopped George Benton at 1:41 of the 9th round of their scheduled 10 round bout Monday night. Referee Pete Tomasco halted the fight because Benton was bleeding badly from a deep cut over his left eye. Rodriguez opened the cut over Benton's eye in the 5th round with his left jabs. The bleeding apparently was controlled until the 9th when Benton kept wiping at his blood-smeared eye. The referee than stepped in." -Associated Press
