Baby Vazquez lost to Joey Olguin by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1968-09-27
  • Location: Civic Auditorium, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
  • Referee: Jim Cleary

"Lightweight Joey Olguin, rendered senseless briefly by a hard left in the 2nd round, came back with a blood-letting jab to hammer out a unanimous decision over Mexico City's Baby Vasquez Friday night at the Civic Auditorium. The 2nd round produced a disputed knockdown by Vasquez that was ruled a slip by referee Jim Cleary. Olguin admitted that the blow hurt him but that he wasn't sure if he would have hit the canvas had he not been pushed down following the punch by Vasquez. Olguin opened a cut over Vasquez' eye in the 4th and re-opened it every round thereafter, piling up points with a sharp jab, his most effective blow." -The Albuquerque Journal

  • Vasquez' manager complained that 6 oz. gloves should have been used instead of the 8 oz. gloves provided. However, the boxing commission held fast, explaining that it was against state law to use the lighter gloves.
  • Attendance - 2,000 (app.)
