Luis Rodriguez 151 lbs beat Gene Armstrong 153 lbs by TKO at 2:09 in round 8 of 10
- Date: 1962-06-30
- Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
- Referee: Barney Felix
"Welterweight contender Luis Rodriguez of Cuba ruined the ring comeback of Gene (Ace) Armstrong Saturday night by flooring him once and battering him for a TKO victory in the 8th round of their television fight at MSG. Referee Barney Felix stopped the scheduled 10 round bout at 2:09 of the 8th because Armstrong of Elizabeth, N.J., was half-groggy and was taking a severe battering without returning any punches. Rodriguez floored Armstrong with a right to the chin in the 4th round. Ace dropped to his knees but rose at the count of five. That was the only knockdown, but in the 5th Armstrong was knocked half through the ropes and would have fallen out onto the ring apron had the referee not intervened." -United Press International
- This was Armstrong's first fight in 16 months after recovering from a cracked left rib sustained during his bout with Dick Tiger on Feb. 18, 1961.
