Bennie Briscoe 159 lbs beat Jose Gonzalez 161 lbs by TKO in round 5 of 10

"It was a fairly even contest as far as it went..halted at the close of the fifth..(The commission physician) ordered the stoppage after checking cuts alongside Gonzalez's eyes.." (The Ring, June 1969, page 48)

"Aggressive Bennie Briscoe of Philadelphia made it two straight over Jose Gonzalez by stopping the rugged Puerto Rican-born New Yorker on cuts at the end of the 5th round of a 10 round middleweight bout at MSG Monday night. Dr. Harry Kleinman ordered the bruising scrap halted because of a deep and wide cut over Gonzalez' right eye. He was also gashed over the left eye. Gonzalez was nicked over both eyes by the end of the 3rd round. In the 4th, a left hook widened the cut over the right eye and covered Jose's face with blood. Realizing that the fight could be stopped at any moment, Gonzalez tried for a knockout but couldn't hurt the strong Philadelphian." -Associated Press
