Vicente Derado 131 lbs beat Mitsunori Seki 129 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Junior lightweight Vicente Derado of Argentina narrowly beat Japan's Mitsunori Seki in a 10-rounder here Sunday night to qualify for a crack at the world crown. There were no knockdowns throughout the fight, but the exchange of speedy blows had the crowd of 5,000 yelling and screaming at Tokyo's Korakuen Stadium. Seki, at 128 3/4, got off to a quick start, landing sharp left hooks and uppercuts, but his foe counter-attacked with heavy right and left combinations. From the 6th round, however, Derado, at 130 1/2, gradually took the offensive and succeeded in cornering Seki with heavy punches that kept the southpaw off-balance. Seki, sustaining a cut over his left eyebrow, fought his foe while occasionally brushing blood off his cut, which seemed to prevent the normally fast-moving Japanese from moving ahead." -Associated Press

  • Under an arrangement made earlier, the winner of this contest would be meeting the winner of the title fight between champion Flash Elorde and Kang Il Suh. However, Derado did not meet Elorde for the title until a year later.
