Hans Werner Wohlers beat Randy Sandy by DQ in round 7 of 10

  • Date: 1959-02-14
  • Location: Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
  • Referee: Max Pippow

American veteran Randy Sandy had his second fight in Europe when he faced unbeaten German middleweight star Hans- Werner Wohlers.

In the 7th round Randy Sandy was rather surprisingly sent to his corner, disqualified by referee Max Pippow. According to the correspondent of Boxing News 20.February 1959, Sandy had pressed Wohlers against the ropes with a volley of body blows. Wohlers turned his back on the American and referee Pippow interupted and made his decision. The crowd booed and whistled in sympathy for Randy Sandy who was outraged by the decision, shouting "No, they can't do that to me !". The American had been warned for low blows in the 2nd and 4th, but Wohlers also went down in the 4th from a legitimate body punch. Sandy looked ahead on points when he was disqualified.

Aftermath: A disqualified fighter in Germany risked losing his purse. The fighter in question had to wait for a decision by the German Boxing Board. But the promotor also had the legitimate right to pay a disqualified fighter. Boxing News February 27.1959 reported that Sandy had received his pay from promotors Goettert and Englert before the Board's decision. If the board approved of the disqualification, it had no means to make the disqualified boxer pay back his purse. It was pure formalism. As the President of the German Board Hans Laufersweiler told Boxing News: "We don't care what promotors do with their own money. As far as we are concerned Sandy's purse has been withheld until the Board meet".
