Charley Shipes 150 lbs beat Andy Heilman 157 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Charley Shipes, the Oakland welterweight, recognized as the world champion by California, overcame a seven pound weight disadvantage with a fine display of smart boxing in pounding out a unanimous 10-round decision over San Pedro's tough middleweight, Andy Heilman, last night at the Coliseum Arena. Shipes kept his aggressive foe off balance with a sharp left jab and quick rights to the head. When Heilman fought his way into close quarters, where he's the most destructive, Shipes neatly tied him up. However, the 2nd round was almost the final one. Two big Heilman rights exploded off Charley's face and his knees buckled. But he kept both his balance and his poise and fought back strongly. Shipes, 150, took command of the fight after his troublesome 2nd round, but he could never relax as the sturdy Heilman, 157, always moved forward." -Oakland Tribune

  • Unofficial Oakland Tribune scorecard - 7-2 Shipes
