- Under California rules, a boxer that was hit below the belt can have as much time as he needs to recover and if he cannot recover, will be awarded either a victory, if ahead on points, or a technical draw if losing on points.
"Mike Nixon, 162, of Glendale, Calif., scored a 10-round unanimous decision Friday night over Manuel Fierro, 162, of Mexicali, Mexico. Fierro, however, could have had at least a draw for the asking under California rules. The strange episode popped up in the 5th round. Nixon, leading on points, was rocked by a hard right to the head and appeared out on his feet but fought back instinctively. Then he landed a double right-hand blow below the belt on Fierro. Fierro, injured, went to the canvas. After seven minutes, Fierro said he could continue and for the rest of the fight, Nixon was the aggressor and won easily." -Associated Press
