"Welterweight Charlie Shipes, who had to be helped to his corner at the end of the 4th round, won a unanimous 10-round decision over Jessie 'Chucho' Garcia of Reynosa, Mexico Tuesday night. Shipes, 145, of Oakland, Calif., was knocked down with a short right cross to the chin with about five seconds to go in the 4th round. He would not have been able to have gotten up in time, but was saved by the bell. Garcia, 146, had been overly cautious before landing the right hand. He came on strong afterward but the veteran Shipes used a left jab to good advantage late in the fight to pick up valuable points." -United Press International
