  • Date: 1962-04-28

  • Referee: Cy Gottfried

"Joey Giambra cut up Cuban Florentino Fernandez' face with a steady tattoo of rights and lefts Saturday night to win an 8th round TKO in a middleweight bout at the Miami Beach Auditorium. The Cuban's face was a giant smear of red at the end of the 7th round and he snorted blood when he tried to breathe. Referee Cy Gottfried stopped the bout after letting the bell ring for the start of the 8th round. Boxing Commission Physician Dr. Alexander Robbins looked at Fernandez twice, and advised Gottfried to stop it. The Cuban had a badly bleeding nose, a split right cheek and another cut over his right eye after his seven bloody rounds with Giambra." -United Press International

  • MSG matchmaker Teddy Brenner offered the winner of this bout to be matched with Denny Moyer in a 10-rounder in MSG on May 26, 1962. However, Moyer eventually was signed to fight Teddy Wright on that date until having to withdraw himself due to illness. Finally, on October 20, 1962, Moyer and Giambra met for what was the vacant and inaugural WBA jr. middleweight title.
