  • Referee: Vern Bybee

"Twenty year old local idol Jimmy Lester scored a stunning 2nd round KO over highly rated Florentino Fernandez of Cuba, who now lives in Miami, before 5,100 fans who paid $16,000 to witness their bout in the Kezar Pavilion. Jimmy, spotting 10 years to his heavier foe, was nailed with some stiff left hooks to the head and body by Florentino early in the 1st round, but took them and came back to floor him for a six count with a right to the jaw in the closing moments of the round. Lester wasted little time in going after his man in the 2nd as he tore out and fired a barrage of punches. A left hook flush on the jaw toppled Fernandez over, but he again got up at six but was rubber-legged and with his jaw hanging open, referee Vern Bybee wisely halted the match after only 49 seconds of the round." -Boxing Illustrated, January 1966 issue

  • Lester broke Fernandez' jaw, but suffered a broken finger himself on the right hand.
