Tommy Loughran vs. Paulino Uzcudun
Paulino Uzcudun 200 lbs lost to Tommy Loughran 185 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1931-11-13
- Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
- Referee: Jed Gahan
- Judge: Tommy Shortell
- Judge: Marty Monroe
"Paulino Uzcudun fought 10 torrid rounds with Tommy Loughran in Jimmy Johnston's Madison Square Garden promotional debut last night. Tommy was coasting along piling up a big lead on points when he slipped while avoiding a Paulino rush during the 6th round, and sprained his ankle. He was limping noticeably when he arose. Only his knowledge of ring lore enabled Loughran to last out the round. Emergency repairs, including bandaging with adhesive tape alleviated the pain and Tommy took command of the fighting again in the 7th. After the injury, Loughran was unable to use his dancing tactics. Instead he was forced to rely on punching - and against a foe rated as the most rugged fighter in the ring. Tommy punched better than in any previous NY appearance, raking the sturdy Basque with sharp left hooks and jolting rights. Meanwhile his own boxing skill enabled him to avoid the majority of Paulino's returns and to take the fight by a split decision." -United Press
- Unofficial UP scorecard - 6-1-3 Loughran
- Referee Jed Gahan and judge Marty Monroe both scored for Loughran, while judge Tommy Shortell voted for Uzcudun.
Post-fight comment
- "He didn't hurt me. No one hurts me. But don't let anyone tell you he doesn't hit. His blows carry some sting even when he is doing fancy boxing. But when he sets himself he can hit as hard as anyone." -Paulino Uzcudun
