Yaqui Lopez 174 lbs beat Mike Quarry 170 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Alvaro "Indian Yaqui" Lopez staked a claim Wednesday night for a higher ranking after he outpointed Mike Quarry in impressive style in a 10 round main event in Stockton's Civic Auditorium. Lopez, the Nevada and Texas light heavyweight champion, who lives in Stockton, knocked down Quarry in the 6th round with a slashing right. The two judges and referee scored the bout 5-3, 6-4 and 7-2 for Lopez. Lopez' margin of victory was widened when referee Hank Elesperu took a point away from Quarry for a slashing low blow in the 9th round." -Reno Evening Gazette

  • Lopez was scheduled to fight WBC champion John Conteh in London this month in a non-title bout but the bout was scuttled due to legal issues Conteh was involved in with his manager George Francis.
  • The day before this bout, the Calif. State Athletic Commisssion stripped Lopez of his California State title which he also held, for not defending his title against Jesse Burnett, despite him successfully defending his title two months earlier against Terry Lee.
