"Johnny Busso of New York stopped Larry Boardman of Marlborough, Conn., at 2:59 of the 9th round of a scheduled 10-rounder last night at Mechanics Building after an eight-knockdown brawl. Referee Tommy Rawson called a halt just before the bell ending the 9th in the nationally televised clash. Busso floored Boardman twice in the 1st round and three times in the 5th, but he himself ran into a jolting left hook and went down for a compulsory eight-count in the 6th. Boardman won the 7th when Busso appeared to tire, and more than held his own in the 8th. Larry had the edge in the 9th until Busso suddenly connected with a left hook. Boardman had to take a count but bounced up only to be sent to the canvas again by Busso's savage flurry." -Associated Press

  • A crowd of only 620 fans, who paid a gross of $1,374 braved a driving sleet storm in Boston to see the fight.
  • At the time of this fight Busso had recently been discharged from the Army and Boardman was due to report to the Marines on May 3rd.

  • "I felt sluggish and couldn't ever get going, but I don't think the referee should have stopped it." -Larry Boardman
  • "The kid won't fight again until he learns to obey instructions and not take unnecessary punches. The layoff while in the Marines should help him." -Sam Boardman, Larry's manager and Father
