Johnny Busso 141 lbs lost to Paolo Rosi 146 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"By the margin of one point on the scorecard of referee Teddy Martin, Paolo Rosi owned a split decision over Johnny Busso in a battle of lightweight contenders. Martin gave Rosi two points for his 3rd round effort against Busso Friday night at MSG. Each round winner received only one point with the exception of Rosi in the 3rd when he shook up his heavier opponent. Busso showed a solid jab that calmed down Rosi when he swarmed to the attack, flinging punches wildly. However, Rosi had all the better of it when they traded freely in the 3rd, 5th and 6th." -Associated Press

  • Judge Joe Agnello - 6-4 Rosi
  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-4 Busso
  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 6-4 Rosi
  • A ringside poll of 14 boxing writers showed 8 scoring for Rosi, 4 for Busso and 2 scoring it a draw.

  • Rosi's handlers argued that they had a private agreement with Busso's camp to come in at 138, although the official contract called for 140, give or take a pound.

Post fight comment

  • "When I'm supposed to fight a lightweight, I want to fight a lightweight, not a 140 pounder." -Paolo Rosi, complaining about the 5 1/2 pound weight difference.
