- Referee: Gilbert Souza
"Counter-punching Robert Vasquez knocked out Andy Ganigan at 2:30 of the 7th round Tuesday night in a stunning upset victory over the No. 1 lightweight contender. Vasquez, from San Antonio, caught the Hawaiian favorite with a straight right in the early seconds of the round. Ganigan, who had been seeking a title fight with champion Jim Watt of Scotland, went down with swivel knees. But referee Gilbert Souza failed to call it a knockdown, saying it was more of a shove than a punch that downed Ganigan. For the next minute, Vasquez was all over the dazed Ganigan, punishing him with a barrage of head and body punches that ended when Ganigan slumped to the canvas in his own corner for the knockout." -United Press International
- The referee and two judges all had Ganigan ahead on points after 6 rounds.
