Notes
Timeline
- According to Verhoeven, wheels to make the fight happen were put in motion on September 13, 2025: while sitting ringside for Saul Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford, Hollywood actor Jason Statham brought up the idea to Turki Al-Sheikh: "Sunday morning, Amsterdam time, I'm on the treadmill running, Jason is calling. I said: 'Bro I'm on the treadmill, let me call you [back]. He was like 'listen up, slow down. I talked to [Alalshikh] he's down; he loves it. He's been watching all your fights, and he wants to do something. I gave him your contact, and his team is going to connect you.' So yeah, he [Statham] was the glue."[1]
- Deal signed by February 10.[2][3][4]
- Announced February 27.[5]
- There was controversy over the WBC sanctioning Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven for the heavyweight title, despite Verhoeven having only one previous professional boxing bout, while established contender Agit Kabayel was overlooked.
Ranking Movements
- Verhoeven entered the fight unranked by major sanctioning bodies. The Ring Magazine did not have him in its Top 10 either.
- Three days after the fight, WBA promoted Verhoeven to No. 15.
- Ten days after the fight, WBC promoted previously unranked Verhoeven to eighth.
The Fight
