- Date: 1957-09-17
- Location: Harringay Arena, Harringay, London, United Kingdom
- Referee: Eugene Henderson
"British heavyweight champion Joe Erskine, 198, of Wales retained his title at the Harringay Arena last night by outpointing challenger Henry Cooper, 189 1/2, of Bellingham, England, in their 15 round bout. Erskine had been the first to draw blood with a two-fisted attack to Cooper's nose in the 4th round. But in the next round it was he who suffered and his right eyelid was opened by Cooper. The blood flowed again in the 6th with Erskine's jabs spreading the gore from his nose across Cooper's face. Again in the 9th, Cooper's nose poured blood after Erskine's jabbing left had been in use. A capacity crowd of more than 10,000 greeted the decision with a burst of booing which had started as the pace of the bout slowed up in the 10th round." -United Press
