"Sugar Ray Seales weakened defending champion Sammy Nesmith with a furious 3rd round barrage of punches, then floored him with a right hook to the heaqd a minute into the 5th round to claim the NABF middleweight championship Tuesday night. Seales, of Tacoma, Wash., the only American boxer to win a gold medal in the '72 Olympic Games at Munich, registered his 59th victory in 66 pro fights. Nesmith is 35-6. After two close rounds, Seales began scoring with repeated blows to the head and stomach. Nesmith, a former national Golden Gloves champ from Indianapolis, took punch after punch for almost a minute without falling. He got a brief reprieve when Seales' left glove broke open with 43 seconds left in the 3rd round." -Associated Press
