"Manny Elias of Phoenix and Dwight Hawkins fought to a bristling 10 round draw last night in the Sports Arena here. Elias, 117 1/2, pounded his 118 lb. rival with vicious left hooks to the head and rights to the body to take most of the middle rounds. Hawkins, of Los Angeles, relied on shots to the midsection and had the advantage in the early going over the slow-starting Arizonan. Elias was stronger in the final round and won that stanza with crisper punching. The two aggressive battlers fought toe-to-toe every round and the crowd loved it, applauding heartily after every round and giving the two an ovation after the bout." -Arizona Republic

• Elias stated after the match that a rematch was in the works with his North American bantamweight championship on the line. However, Elias and Hawkins never fought one and other again.
