Sugar Ray Leonard wins bout to stay undefeated
UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — Former Olympic boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard remained undefeated in his brief professional career by scoring an eighth-round technical knockout in the welterweight fight with Randy Milton Saturday.
More than 3,000 watched the headline bout of a 34-round professional boxing card at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Leonard, from Palmer Park, Md., ran his record to 11-0 by dropping Milton three times. The last was just five seconds from the end of the eighth and final round.
Referee Jimmy Devlin stopped the fight at that point, despite the protests of Milton and his manager, Dave Musco.
Leonard carried the action most of the way. Milton never managed to hit Leonard solidly. Milton, an inmate at the Connecticut State Correctional Institute in Somers, Conn., dropped to 17-5 with the loss.
Following the fight, Leonard announced his next bout will be against Rafael Rodriguez in Baltimore June 3. [1]
