Jerry Quarry vs. Jack Bodell
Jerry Quarry 203 lbs beat Jack Bodell 204 lbs by KO at 1:04 in round 1 of 10
- Date: 1971-11-16
- Location: Empire Pool, Wembley, London, United Kingdom
- Referee: George Smith
The YouTube replay shows the ring in which Bodell fought Quarry to be a smaller one. In any case, Bodell, who had won 17 of his last 18 bouts (the only loss a 15 round European title fight loss to Henry Cooper) appeared to have a height and reach advantage. Seven weeks earlier, Bodell had won the big three: the British, Commonwealth and European Heavyweight Championships with a credible 15 round decision over future contender Joe Bugner. The referee entered the ring and the bell rang without the fighters receiving the usual midring instructions. Bodell attacked Quarry from the start, and showed a desire to brawl.
Quarry, however, noticed Bodell swinging widely, and counterpunched Bodell hard enough for Bodell to go down and get back up. The referee did not give Bodell the customary count as the action somehow continued without a break, and this was probably a mistake. Bodell, whose defenses were down, threw a left hand lead low in mid ring, and Quarry, who saw the mistake, capitalized with a lightening fast counter right hook over the top that finished Bodell, who was counted out at 1:04.
