"Top-rated welterweight Ernie 'Indian Red' Lopez is another step closer to a crack at champion Curtis Cokes today but plans to be a little more careful in his next fight. Lopez was knocked down in the 5th round enroute to a 10th round knockout of tough Jose Valenzuela of Tijuana, Mexico, before a crowd of 2,288 at the Olympic Auditorium Thursday night. Valenzuela, battered throughout most of the fight, was helplessly out on his feet when referee Dick Young stopped the bout with only 25 seconds left. Valenzuela suffered a deep cut in his forehead in the 4th round and bled profusely throughout the action. Lopez was knocked to the canvas with a solid left hook by his rival. But he got up after a mandatory eight count and continued his persistent attack. Valenzuela also was down as a result of a left hook in the 4th round." -United Press International
