"Clyde Gray, Canadian welterweight champion, stopped an outclassed Gene Herrick, 154, of Boston in the 2nd round here Thursday night by decking him three times in that round. Referee Yvon Durelle signaled the end of the fight at 2:55 of the 2nd as Herrick took the third eight-count of the round after going down under a flurry of punches. Gray, 148, of Toronto, charged out in the 2nd and battered Herrick with a series of blows to the head and body and had him bleeding from the mouth. Herrick offered little resistance." -Canadian Press
- Although Gray had won the first round, referee Durelle took it away for a low blow.
- After the bout, Gray's manager, Irv Ungerman, stated he was seeking a title bout for the Commonwealth welterweight championship held by Ralph Charles of England. However, nothing came of it and Gray did not get his opportunity at the Commonwealth title until '73 after Charles retired after an unsuccessful bid for the world welterweight title.
