Clyde Gray beat J J Phillips by TKO in round 3
- Date: 1968-12-10
- Location: Civic Center, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
- This bout was a scheduled 6-rounder.
"Young Clyde Gray has the same problems as many other fighters have experienced in the past - no action in their own hometown, thus forcing them south of the border to get fights. Gray, 146, of Toronto, traveled to Baltimore to meet J.J. Phillips, 145, of New Jersey. After an even opening round, Gray took over in the 2nd with some fierce body-punching, which had the New Jersey boy in trouble. In the 3rd, Phillips was in a bad way, unable to cope with the sharp-punching Gray, when the referee stepped in and awarded the fight to Gray on a TKO. With experience and good handling, the Toronto fighter should have little difficulty in winning a Canadian title." -Ring Magazine, November 1968 issue
