"WBC junior lightweight champion Kuniaki Shibata of Japan Thursday night stopped challenger Ramiro Bolanos of Ecuador in the 15th round of a slugging title match. Referee Anselmo Escobedo Perez of Mexico stopped the bout at 2:29 of the final round when Bolanos took three hard rights to the jaw and appeared helpless. In the 1st round Shibata opened with a right to the body that shook the challenger. He also opened a cut over Bolanos' right eye which was closed late in the fight from successive left hooks by Shibata. Shibata also scored the only knockdown of the fight in the 2nd round when he landed a hard right to the jaw and Bolanos went down into a sitting position for a count of nine. It was an exciting fight with the two fighters exchanging punches most of the way." -United Press International
