"WBC featherweight champion Kuniaki Shibata on Thursday retained his title for the second time by fighting to a controversial 15 round draw with challenger Ernesto Marcel of Panama. Marcel made good use of his reach advantage and caused the champion lots of trouble. Shibata tried repeatedly to bore in in an attempt to score with his powerful left and right hands. Marcel, however, danced away and in turn came in fast to score with a fast right hand attack to the head and body. There were no knockdowns but Shibata suffered a bad cut over his right eye." -United Press International
