Gil Turner 154 lbs lost to Mickey Crawford 143 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Mickey Crawford, fast-rising prospect from Saginaw, Mich., proved he belonged with the welterweight elite, by nosing out Gil Turner, 4th ranked contender from Philadelphia, in the televised 10-rounder at MSG last night. If there was anyone to blame, Turner should have singled himself out for the rap. His low blows cost him the fight. He would have received a draw except for the fouls. Referee Al Berl warned him for low lefts in the first two rounds. When Gil strayed below the border again in the 3rd, Berl took the round from him. Turner, pressing forward all the way and using his weight advantage to bull Mickey to the ropes, led through the first six rounds. He rocked his tall, slender rival with a right to the jaw in the 6th. But from the 7th on, Crawford took charge with his fast combinations. He nailed his rival with punches in clusters that didn't hurt much but piled up points." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-4 Crawford
  • Judge Artie Aidala actually had it 5-5 in rounds but 6-5 for Crawford on points.
