"Bobby Jones, a 3-1 underdog, won a split decision last night over 4th ranked middleweight Gil Turner of Philadelphia. Jones, unranked, took command of the televised 10 rounder from the outset with a stiff left jab and a combination of rights and lefts in close that befuddled the aggressive Turner. In fact, Jones beat Turner at his own game, toe to toe machine gun punching. Unlike most Turner opponents, Jones refused to give ground in the many furious exchanges. Jones staggered Turner several times and opened a bad cut under his left eye." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 5-4-1 Jones

- "I'd like to get a few good fights now with fellows like Joey Giardello, Rocky Castellani and even Bobo Olson." -Bobby Jones
- "I'm taking Gil back into the 147 pound class. He's not big enough and can't put on enough poundage to have a fair chance with middleweights." -George Katz, Turner's manager
